| We start our bicycle trip in Sidari, a major tourist center
that is a convenient meeting point. Sidari's most intriguing
features are the unusual rock formations reminiscent more of
the Four Corners area of the United States than an Ionian island.
Not to mention, Canal d'Amour. The Greeks say that if two lovers
swim through the canal together, they will remain lovers for
life.
This is a bicycle ride for those looking for a modicum of
exercise after hanging out for several days as a beach potato.
The ride is easy going, ideal for families with youngsters.
There are no challenging climbs, most of the road is flat
and the distance we cover is do-able over the course of a
full day.
We will pedal through one traditional village after another,
all of them located on relatively secluded back roads which
are easy to navigate on two wheels. Towns such as Peroulades,
Armenades, Dafni and Agrafi are not featured in standard
guide books, yet they are charming places with local who
make you feel welcomed by their hospitality. It will not
surprise you to learn that in Greek hospitality means "friends
of strangers".
We will eat in a traditional taverna and stop several times
at a kafeneion for a cafe or just to watch a hearty game
of tavli (backgammon) in session. It is the people themselves
and the simple beauty of the land that will leave you with
fond memories of your cycling day in Corfu.
