We'll spend the morning when we are fresh and energized
making the ascent up to Sangri. The climb, about 350 meters,
will not be hard because the beautiful scenery along the route
succeeds in distracting you from the pedaling. There are two
towns along the route to rest in, if need be. From Sangri we
will head directly to Dimitra's Temple. This modest ancient
site was lovingly and tastefully restored to make it an attractive
point of interest on Naxos. A tenderly laid stone pathway,
informative signage and a terrific view all contribute to an
interesting stop on our journey.
After so much pedaling uphill, we now pedal down to the
western coast of Naxos. Here we'll find glorious white sandy
beaches and lots of traditional tavernas with fresh fish
and other local delicacies. We cycle along the sea for sometime
until we reach a choice swimming beach, of which there are
plenty, and relax here for the rest of the afternoon.
Our bicycles are calling us to return to Hora. The route
back continues to follow Naxos' west coast on flat and easy-to-cycle
terrain. We cruise into Hora elated that we discovered Naxos'
treasures with our own energy, on the seat of a bike. We
feel proud and fulfilled and ready for the next cycling venture!
