Our bicycle tour takes you to the amazing Valley of the
Butterflies, where for a two-month period (July, August) thousands
of these multi-colored delicate creatures gather exclusively
at this spot on Rhodes. And what better way to reach the Valley
than on two wheels across back roads. Actually, they are Jersey
tiger moths and they're attracted to the vanilla-scented resin
of the storax trees. Local churches use the resin to make frankincense.
We have a slow and pleasant 20 kilometer bicycle climb up
to the Butterfly Valley, and our efforts will be rewarded
by the spectacular views and beautiful scenery. The nature
park is as enjoyable as the butterflies who inhabit its grounds.
The park has winding rivers, waterfalls, footpaths, rustic
bridges, tranquil rock pools, a serene lake and even an old
Italian windmill. The Butterfly Valley is a place where you
will sigh in splendor over its physical beauty. Naturally,
we will have lunch here.
After lunch we'll get on our bikes for the short ride over
to Moni Kalopetras, an 18th century church located in a very
tranquil spot. It was built in 1784 by an exiled Greek prince
who fought against the Turks.
On our descent, we'll pedal to Filerimos Hill where you
may walk a promenade leading to a huge cross that can be
seen for miles around. Lining the path are images carved
in a row of rocks depicting the Stations of the Cross, a
gift from Italy. There are also Doric remains on this hill
and a lovely monastery.
Then it's downhill all the way to Ialyssos where we'll stop
for an afternoon cafe by the sea to finalize what may well
turn out to be your most memorable day in Rhodes.
